CLASS LEVELS

INTRO  | An intro class focuses on basic rhythm and techniques within the context of various forms of percussive dance. While we wont be focusing on mastery of any one, students in an introductory class will learn about the subtleties of the music and rhythm in the traditions, where they come from, and how they're related. Students will leave an intro class with a basic knowledge of the various traditions, and being able to perform at least 3 basic steps.

THIS LEVEL IS APPROPTIATE IF YOU ARE A COMPLETE BEGINNER, OR HAVE SOME EXPERIENCE WITH PERCUSSIVE DANCE AND ARE INTERESTED IN WORKING ON THE FUNDAMENTAL OF CREATING RHYTHM IN A CULTURALLY INTERESTING SETTING.

BEGINNING | Beginning classes are for students who have some experience with percussive dance and are ready to expand their repertoire with regards to dance styles. Standard moves will be translated through the various dance forms and students will focus on learning the styles and techniques specific to each tradition.

THIS LEVEL IS APPROPTIATE FOR THE STUDENT WHO CAN DO TREBLES/SHUFFLES WITH EASE AND IN TIME, AND HAS PRACTICED EXTENDED SEQUENCES WITHIN SOME FORM OF PERCUSSIVE DANCE.

INTERMEDIATE | After the beginning level, students would either move on to beginning or intermediate classes related to a particular style of dance, or into INT/ADV Percussive Dance. These classes will explore rhythms and dances within the various contexts of the many types of percussive dances at a more advanced level. At this stage it becomes a more creative venture, exploring rhythm, while holding on to foundations of the various traditions.

THIS LEVEL IS APPROPRIATE FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE MASTERED "TIME" STEPS FROM EACH OF THE TRADITONS LISTED AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO PERFORM STEPS IN TIME, WITH PROPER SWING, AND SHOW AN UNDERSTANDING FOR THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICS OF EACH TYPE OF DANCE. IN OUR OPINION, IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO HAVE A FOUNDATION IN TRADTIONS IF YOU INTEND TO PLAY WITH AND ADAPT THEM!

ADVANCED | For students who have completed the intermediate level and wish to move on!
