Modern, competitive, Irish step dancing as we know it today, has evolved over centuries. Prior to the Gaelic Revival (late 1800s and early 1900s), Irish step dancing was a localized, vernacular dance with steps and styles that varied from town to town and dance master to dance master. The Gaelic Revival ushered in an era of competitions and national and international standards. This prompted a refinement and distillation of what became known as Irish step dancing.

This style of Irish dance continues to evolve constantly within the competitive world. What is considered standard now, was unheard of 5, 10, or 15 years ago.
